I have known Albert for thirty-five years and so I feel confident in appraising both his personal qualities  and abilities.

My encounters with Albert range from our common interest as youth and community workers to his academic achievements as one of my students at University.  He started ‘youth’ studies at Diploma level all the way to a Masters degree.

Albert’s name is synonymous with youth and community work – both locally and abroad – at State level, at Church level, at University level as Head of Student Advisory Services and with voluntary organisations.  His idefaticable drive lends itself ‘throughout and about’:  “ask Albert and he will deliver” the saying goes.  To everybody’s surprise the result is always satisfying and excellent.

As long-standing friends my advice to Albert is to continue spreading his love for people management – in terms of social enterprise and pastoral leadership – while, at the same time, planning recovery periods from his ultra-busy schedule and strongly embracing his close family ties.

When we established the Diaconia Team at St Francis of Assisi Parish in Qawra, Mr. Albert Debono, then leader of the Parish Diaconia in Malta, became both our mentor and guide.  Soon after, our parish launched the Franciscan Welfare Association (FWA), which began receiving growing requests for support. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Albert mobilised parishes and volunteers nationwide into a coordinated network delivering Solidarity Meals to vulnerable households.

In the years that followed, as our parish faced more social case referrals and later welcomed Ukrainian war refugees, Albert remained central in expanding services for all parishes in Malta. He helped establish a shared kitchen, a thrift shop in Valletta, a donation network for furniture and white goods, and structured training for Diaconia volunteers.

Albert’s vision has profoundly shaped parish social care, setting a lasting model of compassion and professionalism.

I first met Albert when I was just eighteen and had made the difficult decision to leave Malta to work in London. From the very beginning, Albert believed in me  he pushed me to grow, helped me stay focused, and supported me through every twist and turn of that journey. More recently, when I decided to go back to studying, Albert wasn’t just a coach or mentor he became a guide in adapting and nurturing my personal growth.

Working with Albert on youth-oriented projects has also shown me just how deeply he cares: his passion is second to none. He brings wisdom, empathy, and a genuine commitment to helping people become more than they ever thought possible.

If you’re looking for someone who will challenge you, support you, and walk beside you  Albert is that person.

I had the privilege of working with Albert during my time at the Ronald McDonald House Charity in Malta, particularly at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, Albert was coordinating a programme with the Malta Diocese to distribute food across various locations in Malta. What stood out most was not just his organisational ability, but the humanity he brought into every aspect of his work. Albert has a natural gift for making people feel comfortable and valued, whether they are colleagues, volunteers, or those receiving support. His empathy, respect for different cultures, and genuine understanding of people’s needs were evident in the way he led and collaborated with others. At the same time, Albert upholds strong ethical principles, ensuring that every action is guided by fairness and dignity. Working alongside him was inspiring, and I have no doubt he brings the same dedication and compassion to all he does.
